Sunday I began my day with a run around the neighborhood.
This was pretty uneventful and pretty brutal given that Prague is essentially a
valley and all of the parks are huge hills. However, the view at the top was
incredible and right up the street from our apartment! We then went on tour of the city with our gudies, Daniela and
Martin. It was great to get an overall idea of what actually is in Prague. They did a great job of
gearing the trip to our tastes, pointing out interesting cafes, bars, or
shopping areas along with historical sites. After that, Julie and I headed to meet Claire S and Olivia in the beer garden.
Walking up the hill to our meeting point at the statue, we both went to text
Claire only to realize that neither one of us had put our SIM cards in our phone!
(Just one example of the “Dana and Julie continue to make ridiciulous mistakes”
saga..more to come on that soon). We decided to find an English speaker with a Czech phone…not as common
as you would think! However, we were able to meet some Irish men who were also
locals..Bingo. Borrowing their phone we were able to find Claire and Olivia,
who happened to be right around the corner, and somehow everything fell more
into place. The Beer Garden is perfect. Situated in a shady part of the park,
there are tons of long wooden tables and drink stands surrounding a large
screen. We sat down to watch tennis and I imagined all of the times that people
watched my favorite Czech relative, Hana, play! It was so cool to be able to
sit in on that experience and think of her. Phoneless, we all set off to meet
Claire F and Bri at Maitrea, a vegetarian restaurant in Old Town. As we
discussed the odds of both groups finding the restaurant – or each other- we
literally bumped into them in the street! Lesson of the day: It is possible to
live the old school way! Even though Prague is a big city, it is crazy how
small it gets. Although we are lost at least 75% of the day, its nice to feel the city getting
smaller.
We walked around Old Town square then headed home. During this, I introduced the group to the game “What are the odds?” (Credit to Alex Burger) This is when you ask someone the odds of something and both parties say a number from 0 to their odds. We played this throughout the square, with no one guessing the same number. However, as we got home I asked Julie the odds of her going in the bar next door. With a fifty-fifty shot, we both said "TWO!"and had to go in. This was a lucky guess. Since the bar was closing, there were very few people there and we were able to talk to two locals, Mikael and Josef. It was nice to finally break the cultural divide a bit, especially considering they are our neighbors! Overall, it was a great day
